Christmas Markets in Europe
Christmas is probably one of the few times of year when people crave the cold rather than the heat. Europe draws thousands of tourists a year to its Christmas markets. Here are a few of our favourites:
Plaisirs D'Hiver – Belgium
Established in 2002, this Brussels market is fast becoming a Yuletide attraction of the city. Each year it puts on a spectacle of sight and sound in GroteMarkt. Over 200 traditional huts from all over the world selling crafts, food, and stocking fillers are set up here alongside the typical dishes of Moules and Gauffres. There is also an ice skating rink, and a huge ferris wheel
Winter Wonderland – London
London has long had several winter markets in operation around the city, but the Winter Wonderland attraction is more than just a place to shop. With a ferris wheel to rival the London Eye, fairground attractions, several bars and an ice rink, there is enough to entertain the family for a whole day. Of course, one can sample pancakes, waffles and mulled wine while browsing through craft items from around Europe.
Jul – Denmark
Copenhagen's offering comes from its famous amusement park Tivoli Gardens. Lights are organised across the trees which lines stalls for four miles. The 150 year old fairground rides draw up to a million travellers a year.
Various – Germany
Perhaps the country most famous for it's Christmas markets, German cities definitely do not disappoint. Streizelmarkt in Dresden was established in the 15th century, and still comprises of over 200 stalls selling ceramics, crafts, blown glass amongst other treats, all arranged around a 3 ton stolen fruit cake which goes on to parade through the city. Nuremberg's 17th century market is probably the best known, attracting over 2million visitors a year. Gingerbread and bratwurst fill the town, while live music can be heard well into the night. There isr also a curious prune puppet contest, and several stalls selling traditional wood-carved puppets.
Christkindlmarkt – Vienna
Attracting over 3 million visitors, this is one of the biggest Christmas markets in Europe. Over 150 stalls dominate Rathausplatz selling traditional Christmas crafts and decorations, alongside delicious pastries and spiced punch. The whole thing is lit up by lamps in the shape of hearts and gingerbread men. There is also a smaller market in the Schonbrunn Palace, and an advent concert in Rathaus.
St Germain and Christkindelsmarik – France
Lining the trendy St Germain area in Paris is another stylish offering. Clothes, crafts, food, and other curiosities surround the old church, and make an interesting contrast to the designer stores nearby. In front of Strasbourg Cathedral is France's oldest Christmas market, which has welcomed visitors to unique decorations and nativity scenes. Local specialities are also on offer, from both the French and German influence.
