Delhi, India

A  city of two halves - once the pride of late colonial British India, Delhi is a true bustling metropolis, filled with exciting sounds and smells. Delhi has been the capital of India since its independence in 1947, but even before that, the British moved their capital here from Calcutta (now Kolkata). The city was divided into two: Old Delhi, Islamic India’s capital, and the then British ruled, New Delhi.

Old Delhi is steeped in history, dating back 5,000 years. It is host to ancient temples, shrines, medieval bazaars and distinctive old buildings. This side of the city epitomizes the architectural beauty of the Mughal Empire and is packed with narrow streets that surround the Red Fort's imposing walls. Old Delhi is a lively icon of mystery and wonder.

In contrast, New Delhi is spacious, with wide boulevards and open spaces. It is home to some of the most elegant mansions, luxury hotels, top restaurants and chic shopping emporia. It is the hub of business and politics and one of the busiest international gateways in India. Here you can relish Victorian imperial design while whizzing around in one of the city's famous three-wheeled auto rickshaws.
